Drummer/percussionist, Mark DeRose is known in Japan for his recording and performance work with Hino Terumasa, Marlene, Shirai Takako, Gao, Koyanagi Yuki, Ishii Seiko, Nishikiori Ken, Togi Hideki, ASKA (Chage & Aska) and many others. Mark has composed, arranged and directed works for NHK Television - Japan's National Broadcasting Corporation, and educational television, government sponsored educational videos and animated soundtracks. With close to a 100 recording credits including: CD recordings, TV and Movie sound track recordings and TV commercial recordings, Mark is one of the most recorded drummer/percussionists in Japan.




Mark is from upstate New York and started private training in drums in 1965. At the age of ten, he included studies in jazz with jazz drummer, Michael Gerardi and supplemented his education by attending the New York State Music Camps during the summers of 1975 and 1976 where he began formal training in Latin percussion and classical percussion under the supervision of Thomas Brown.

In 1976, Mark became a member of the New York Musician's Union and began performing professionally with local jazz musicians in big band and combo settings. He continued his studies at the College of St. Rose from 1977-1979 and majored in classical percussion and contemporary percussion ensemble performance with David S. Bittner, principal first percussionist with the Albany Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the Percussive Arts Society from 1977-1981, Mark performed in several contemporary percussion ensembles throughout New England. From 1979-1980, he attended the Boston Conservatory of Music and studied classical percussion performance with Arthur Press, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Walter Tokarczyk, Boston Pops Orchestra and majored in music education. Mark has performed with the Melrose Symphony Orchestra and the Mohawk Valley Symphony Orchestra.

In 1979, Mark began formal training in the martial arts at the Wah-lum School of Kung-fu and the Gin Soon Choo School of Tai Chi Chuan in Boston, Massachusetts.

From 1980-1984, he attended the Berklee College of Music and received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Composition & Arranging. During this time, Mark performed regularly throughout New England with the Victor Mendoza Quartet and his own jazz trio.

In 1982, Mark took time off from college to accept a contract with the Opryland Company and worked for 'Opryland', an affiliate of the Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, at the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. He then returned to the Berklee College of Music in 1983 and graduated in 1984.

After college, Mark lived and worked in Nashville, Tennessee and later moved to Miami, Florida where he performed for the cruise lines as house drummer/percussionist. During his tours throughout the Caribbean, Mark had the opportunity to study and work with the Latin percussionists who frequently performed on the ships. His love for Latin music especially, Afro Cuban music grew and he continued to study full time in Miami.

In the spring of 1985, Mark moved to Los Angeles and began working as a drummer/percussionist for TV and radio commercial recordings and performances with various ensembles including Richard Ramsey's, 'Architects of Rhythm' and Brent Lewis' world percussion ensemble, the 'Ika Uma Band'. It was during this time Mark began studying with Alex Acuna. Other studies to date include African hand drumming with Brent Lewis and Bata drumming with Don Alias.

In the fall of 1985, Mark traveled to Japan for the first time with a Los Angeles based band. During his three month stay, he met and worked with the local musicians. Mark returned to the United States in December of 1986 and in the years that followed was frequently invited to return to Japan for concerts and recordings.

In January of 1986, Mark decided to continue his studies in the martial arts, karate and entered the Inyoryu Kenpo Karate Jutsudo, Honbu Dojo in Kyoto, Japan where he lived and studied full time. Mark continued to perform regularly in the Kyoto City and Osaka City areas. Mark later received his black belt rank under Founder and Grand Master, Hirayama Seiji and remains a member of the Inyoryu Kenpo Karate Jutsudo, Honbu Dojo.

Mark has performed with many artists throughout Japan including Hino Terumasa, Don Alias and Lew Tabakin and has appeared at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival, Ocean Blue Jazz Festival, Idyllwild Jazz Festival and others. In 1999 Mark appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival with his group 'DANOBI', starting the new trend in jazz inspired, Asian world music in Japan.

Mark has made his home in Japan since 1987 and has been living in Tokyo since 1991.
